No. By definition, a receiver is a tuner, pre-amplifier & amplifier all in one. Any receiver made before 1990 should have a built-in phono pre-amp. I have to agree with Lance’s & Dances With Cats answers too.
Your better receivers from that era are from Pioneer; Marantz; Harmon Kardon; there are other models and brands that have good product but if you don’;t know what your looking for or how to tell you probably should stick with something that has a good reputation…you probably will pay a little more but you will get something of good quality..
What you need to look for in a receiver is a Phono input, which older receivers (stereo) have. Some newer receiver now have the Phono input also. You do not need to have an amplifier if you buy a receiver. Hope this will help you out.
Well both AVDADDY and bbt91945 are correct but I’d like to point out something that should be obvious. Such a receiver is going to be old and will probably have a few problems. Audio equipment from this "golden age" was often built to better standards than the equipment being sold today. Manufacturers such as Pioneer and Marantz were engaged in a vigorous competition to produce the best products. Thus the demand for such equipment is high and aficionados of such equipment (I include myself in that group) will go to quite a bit of trouble to bring it back to good as new, if not better than new, condition. There are many people who rebuild vintage audio gear. Some simply rebuild units that are sent to them and some do this as well as maintain a stock of rebuilt units. If you were to buy an unrestored receiver it will likely have noisy, dirty volume and tone controls, may have dead channels and may have electronic problems from old, dried out components like capacitors. IMHO you should either buy an unrestored receiver and send it out for restoration or buy a restored receiver. Be advised however, that this is not at all cheap. It takes quite a bit of time to pull these components apart, diagnose and install new components. Time is money as they say and the people who do it are highly skilled and don’t work cheap. The demand for such collector gear is high and anything that is highly sought after will fetch a pretty penny. Given that, you might want to reconsider and simpy buy a new receiver that has a phono input to use with your turntable such as a Yamaha RS500 or Onkyo TX 8255. If you still think a vintage receiver if for you you may want to look at this link which lists merhants who who specialize in restoration of vintage gear:
